I’ve installed a couple of rain water tanks - inside and the outside the greenhouse. To avoid still water that attracts mozzies, I’ve added a solar powered air pump. It’s absurdly loud inside the greenhouse though. I was trying all sorts of things to dampen the sound. Found a YouTube video where someone suspends a similar pump in a glass jar and it actually works! Can still hear it but not to the point of distraction. Feel absurdly pleased with myself. Now to find a way to make it look nice.

You sound super organised. I cleared our greenhouse 2 or 3 years ago, then never got round to using it. Now it is entirely overgrown with brambles.

the previous owners had an odd arrangement of water butts and barrels that overflowed everywhere and caused problems. I needed to do something with the rain water so went for something a bit more stylish and with suitable overflows. I even have aquatic plants in the tanks! The potting benches had rotted too so I’ve taken everything out and remade them with metal legs. Hopefully I can start growing stuff now!

Congratulations on the greenhouse progress. Can you host a seeds and starts tea? #growyourown

ooh what’s that then?

It was an imaginary garden tea party to jump start the greenhouse experience. Guests would bring gardening seeds to share. And other guests would be sharing plants they have started.

what a lovely idea! I’m not doing so well on the plants yet but I could make cake!

Cake is appropriate. What plants are you welcoming?

I do have lots of seeds to start. I needed to sort out benches and water first. Manure and/or compost for the bed (a couple of friends have horses so probably manure). Greenhouse will be for growing tomatoes and cucumbers mainly but also starting off everything else.

The fediverse has compost enthusiasts.
