Thank you all for the help! I've been able to get Mac in to see the vet yesterday. I was pretty drained or I'd have posted already. The vet examined his mouth and gave him antibiotics and pain injections to get him to feel better for now. We're going to follow up in a couple weeks (or sooner if necessary) to see if that helped or if he needs a couple teeth out. She said that with checkups and meds the tooth removal could wait until after the trip to get my kittens.
The teeth themselves are ok, they are just potentially interacting with his gums in a way that causes an autoimmune flare-up called stomatitis. A lot of cats have it.
Mac is in good health otherwise.
The pain meds already seem to have helped him feel better. He seems in less discomfort and his eyes aren't as weepy anymore (that was a symptom last December too). And his overall vibe is one of relief and gratitude.
So I wanted to pass on his thanks to you.
