On This Day…

...in 1863 Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and declared "that all persons held as slaves" within rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free.” I like to remember that on New Years Day. We Americans are far from perfect, but we strive to be better.
